Mrs. Smith’s Class September 10, 2010
A peek at our week:
This week, we are studying the short I so and practicing –in and –ig word families. We are also summarizing stories we have read. We have talked about the difference between summarizing (telling the most important parts) and retelling (telling everything that happened). We also wrote “I wonder…” statements about a story in our reading response journals. It is amazing what great thinkers our first graders are! In math, we are putting two or three numbers in order. We are learning the meaning of greater, less and between. We have used counters and a number line to practice these skills. We have been studying our responsibilities at home and at school. We have made and signed our own “Classroom Constitution.”

Reading log (part of our weekly homework)
For your child’s weekly reading log, please have your child read a book to you and you can read a book to your child. Reading to your child is still important because it creates a model and helps children see fluent reading. My goal for this portion of the homework is for it to take 10-15 minutes a night. If your child wants to read a chapter book, that is fine. However, please make sure it is not too hard. If they are making more than 5 mistakes per page, then the book is too hard. If your child really wants to read it, read it to them until they become a more fluent reader. It is OK to put chapters or page numbers on the reading log if the book you are reading from is long and will take several nights to read. I hope this helps! I am very flexible with the reading portion of the homework because my goal is for you to read books that are interesting and a good fit for your child. Please let me know if you need help finding a book that is on your child’s reading level and I will be happy to help.
