newsletter April 1

Have a safe and relaxing Spring Break!

We are in need glue sticks and Kleenex if you would like to donate these items.

Writing
In writing, we are working on writing reports about animals.  This week, we read a non-fiction book and wrote important information on a brainstorming worksheet.  The students also worked in small groups to find out information about an animal of their choice.  After spring break, we will be working on writing our animal reports.

Math News
We are working on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.  For example, we have been adding 62 + 30 =.  We have discussed how to add and subtract two digit numbers that require regrouping (the old fashioned term is borrowing), but the students are not required to master regrouping in first grade.

A Peek at the Week
This week, we have been working on ways to make the long I sound.  We have learned that “igh” and “i” are two ways to spell this sound.  We have also worked on finding the problem and solution in a story.

Show and Tell on Monday
We filled up another smart chart!  Monday will be show and tell.  Your child can bring a toy to school to share with their classmates.  They will also be allowed to play with their toy during recess.  Please do not send any video games.  Also, please do not send anything too expensive or special.  I do not want anything to get lost or broken.

Legends Ticket
Please look in your child’s folder for  tickets to the Lexington Legends Baseball game.  Our school night is Saturday, April 9th.  If you are unable to make the WES night your tickets will be valid for a Legends game on either May 1st or 2nd.  If you will not be using your ticket you may return it to your child’s teacher for another family to use.
