A peek at our week:
This week, we are studying the ending sound blends of –nd and -nk. We read nonfiction books this week and discussed the author’s purposes for writing the story. In writing, we wrote “Guess What” poems. The students described something and the rest of our class will try to guess what they have written about. In math, we are continuing to work on addition. We have been discussing turnaround facts. An example of a turnaround fact is 2+4=6 and 4+2=6.

SMART chart
Hooray! We filled up another SMART chart. As a reward for our achievement, your child may bring in a toy to share (with partners) and play with at recess to school. Your child can bring a toy to school on Monday, September 27. No video games or expensive toys, please.

Wilmore Elementary Parent-School Learning Agreement
There is a blue “Learning Agreement” in your child’s star folder today. Please read and sign this paper by parent/guardian signature. Also, please have your child sign the compact under the student signature. This is an important part of our reading grant and you will be asked in the spring if you signed this learning compact.

A peek at our week:
This week, we are studying blends and the sounds of cr, gr and tr. We are also learning about the importance of the setting in a story. We will be using a familiar story and changing the setting to see how different the story will be. We are learning about community helpers and will be going on a walking field trip to downtown Wilmore at the end of September to meet the community helpers in Wilmore. In math, we are working on adding numbers and exploring this process with objects. We are working on learning that doubles are when the two parts of the addition problem are the same. For example, 0+0=0, 1+1= 2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc. Please practice double addition problems at home!

Mrs. Smith’s Class September 10, 2010
A peek at our week:
This week, we are studying the short I so and practicing –in and –ig word families. We are also summarizing stories we have read. We have talked about the difference between summarizing (telling the most important parts) and retelling (telling everything that happened). We also wrote “I wonder…” statements about a story in our reading response journals. It is amazing what great thinkers our first graders are! In math, we are putting two or three numbers in order. We are learning the meaning of greater, less and between. We have used counters and a number line to practice these skills. We have been studying our responsibilities at home and at school. We have made and signed our own “Classroom Constitution.”

Star Student
We will be going in birthday order for star student. Our star students in September will be students who were born in January or February. We may get to a few students who were born in March.

Reading log (part of our weekly homework)
For your child’s weekly reading log, please have your child read a book to you and you can read a book to your child. Reading to your child is still important because it creates a model and helps children see fluent reading. My goal for this portion of the homework is for it to take 10-15 minutes a night. If your child wants to read a chapter book, that is fine. However, please make sure it is not too hard. If they are making more than 5 mistakes per page, then the book is too hard. If your child really wants to read it, read it to them until they become a more fluent reader. It is OK to put chapters or page numbers on the reading log if the book you are reading from is long and will take several nights to read. I hope this helps! I am very flexible with the reading portion of the homework because my goal is for you to read books that are interesting and a good fit for your child. Please let me know if you need help finding a book that is on your child’s reading level and I will be happy to help.
