August 27th newsletter

Mrs. Smith’s Class August 27, 2010
A peek at our week:
We are settling into a routine. This week, we have learned about the short a families of –at and –an. We have sorted pictures and words and practiced writing these words. Also, we have worked on identifying characters in stories and telling about characters. We are finishing our “All about me” unit and I am very excited for you to view your student’s work at our “Parent Information Night.”

Specials Schedule
Note: This is on a rotating 6 day schedule. Our library and gym days will change every week.
Monday: gym and music Tuesday: library Wednesday: Spanish and integrated studies Thursday: computer Friday: music, gym and library

Upcoming Events
Sept. 2 – First grade parent orientation meeting (6:30-7:30)
Sept. 9 – first grade grandparents are invited to join us for lunch from 11:10-11:35
Sept. 17 – family fun night at 6:00

Clothespins
We use clothespins as our warning system. Students get three clothespins each day and every time I give a reminder I take a clothespin. I do this because it is a visual clue for me and the students about how many warnings the students have had. This system has helped a lot with behavior.

STAR folder
Please put any papers or notes in the STAR folder. I do not look at the Friday folders. The students put their own work in the folder and return the empty Friday Folder to their mailbox on Monday.

Homework
Your child has his or her first homework of the year! It is due Friday, August 27. Please read and fill out the reading log on the front of the homework. Reading is the most important part of our homework. Also, study the spelling words on the front of the homework for our spelling test on Friday. Finally, your child will need to complete the worksheets. They have a front and back side. Math homework will start next week.
